Disposable camera filter: flash, grain, date stamp

The disposable camera look is the most requested vintage filter for a reason: it makes any night out look like the best night of the year. Below are five phone photos developed with five of Vinta's disposable cameras — each with its own flash, grain and colour — so you can pick yours.

Why disposable photos look the way they do

A single-use camera is about as simple as a camera gets: a fixed plastic lens, one shutter speed, a roll of ISO 400 or 800 colour film and a small flash. Everything people love about the look comes from those limits.

  • The flash. It's bright, close and on-axis, so faces pop, skin goes a little hot, and anything more than a few metres away falls into darkness.
  • Fast, grainy film. Grain sits over everything, colours shift warm or cool depending on the film, and blacks are never quite black.
  • The plastic lens. Soft corners, a bit of vignetting and no background blur.
  • The lab. Prints and scans added their own colour, and light leaks or a date imprinted in orange were part of the deal.

A phone does the opposite on every count, which is why a photo from a night out looks so clinical. Vinta's disposable cameras put the limits back.

D FUNS · costume party. A pink-leaning flash that's kind to skin and loves fairy lights. More on this one in the Halloween guide.

Same selfie, two decades

Disposables and early digital cameras get lumped together as “vintage”, but they look nothing alike. Here's the hero selfie through Vinta's CCD digicam instead: cooler, sharper and cleaner — 2006 rather than 1999.

How to take a photo that looks disposable

  • Get close. A real disposable flash only reaches a few metres. One to three steps away from your subject is the sweet spot.
  • Shoot at night or indoors. The look is built on flash against darkness. In bright daylight pick DISPOSABLE-2 or DQS instead.
  • Don't fix the framing. Slightly crooked, a bit too much ceiling, someone half out of frame — that's the charm.
  • Shoot a lot, keep a few. Disposable photos look best as a dump: post eight or ten together.

How to do it in Vinta

  1. Pick a camera

Open Vinta and tap the camera button at the bottom right. The drawer lists every camera with a one-line description of its look.

  2. Shoot or import

Press the shutter to shoot with the look applied live, or tap the import button to bring in a photo you've already taken.

  3. Develop & save

On the Develop Photo screen, swipe through the cameras to preview each look on your photo, then tap Develop & Save. It lands in your Photos library, with no watermark.

FAQ

What is the best disposable camera filter for iPhone?

It depends on the light. For flash photos at night, start with DISPOSABLE-1 or FQS in Vinta. For daylight, DISPOSABLE-2 keeps whites crisp, and DQS gives a softer, creamier look.

How do I add the date stamp?

Some of Vinta's disposable cameras, such as DISPOSABLE-1 and FQS, add an orange date imprint to the photo automatically, the way a real camera would.

Can I make old photos look like they were taken on a disposable?

Yes. Import them from your camera roll, pick a disposable on the Develop Photo screen and save. It works best on photos taken with flash or in low light.

Is the disposable camera filter free?

Vinta is free on the App Store, and the cameras shown here are available in the free app. Exports have no watermark.

About these photos: the “before” images are AI-generated stand-ins for everyday phone snapshots, made so we could show the same scenes across many cameras without using anyone's personal photos. Every “after” is the unedited output of Vinta developing that image on the date of this post — no extra editing, no cherry-picked presets.
